What is Cal Poly Taga?

Technical Association of the Graphic Arts, also known as TAGA, is a hands-on competitive Graphic Communication club with seven chapter locations. Every year, Cal Poly TAGA enters a six-month long production process for the annual international TAGA student publication competition. Volume 41 will be presented at the 2024 conference in Dallas, Texas from March 12th - March 14th.

We research.

The publication consists of technical papers written by students from the Graphic Communication department that explore aspects of the evolving print industry and technological innovation. TAGA researches and compiles the papers, converting them to articles for the journal.

We design.

TAGA welcomes students of all skill levels and backgrounds to join the club. It is an opportunity to gain hands-on Graphic Communication experience with publication design, web design, research, management, digital production, and print production.

We produce.

Here at Cal Poly, we pride ourselves in producing the journal both in-house and with a local print company. In collaboration with our student-operated print shop, University Graphic Systems, and Poor Richard's Press, TAGA produces over 100 journals. The journal is completely student managed, which allows us to practice Cal Poly's "Learn by Doing" philosophy.

We compete.

Once completed, the journal is entered into the Helmut Kipphan Student Chapter Competition at the TAGA conference. Each university is judged in the categories of publication design, digital application, production quality, and content. Aside from the student competition, the conference offers seminars on the latest technology in the graphic communication industry and opportunities to network with industry leaders.

We learn by doing.
